International Kid’s Yoga Day is coming up next week!  On April 7th, thousands of children across the globe will participate in schools, yoga studios, gyms, recreation centers, libraries, parks and at home!  An estimated 30,000 children will participate in all 50 states and in 36 countries across the globe!  International Kid’s Yoga Day was started in 2016 by Theresa Power, author of “The ABC’s of Yoga for Kids,” and was such a success she decided to make it an annual tradition.

As a yoga teacher and a mom, I have seen the benefits of yoga for children first hand! Yoga is a non-competitive practice that helps children identify and express their emotions, build self-esteem, strengthen interpersonal relationships and grow to be a mindful member of their communities.  Practicing yoga also helps children be more active; building strength, improving flexibility, reducing stress and encouraging improved balance and coordination.

Locally, there are several yoga teachers in the area who are participating from Sullivan’s Island to Summerville!  Some teachers are bringing yoga into the classroom for the day, while others are offering free classes open to the public.  Some teachers, like Melody Herscher of Kidding Around Yoga with Melody and A Yogi Walks into a School, are doing both!
