Teaching children gratitude and kindness through blessing bags.

November 20, 2014
Excited children and their parents from the group Homeschooling Charleston Style came together on Tuesday to create 200 blessing bags for the homeless in Charleston.   Prior to filling the bags. parents took their kids shopping to purchase things like socks, bottled water, non-perishable food items, band-aids, hand sanitizer, sewing kits, and chap stick.  An assembly line was formed and each child choose a large Ziploc baggie and went to each station where they excitedly filled their bags with the items.   The children did an amazing job and you could see their little hearts filled with compassion for the people that they would help in the future. Each family received several bags to take home, to keep in their cars and hand out to people in need as they come across them.

Blessing bags are an easy and wonderful way to teach children gratitude for what they have and compassion for those that have not.  You could do it with any group of children or even as a family.   Just gather a few of the above mentioned items, fill the bags and you are all set to teach your kids how caring for others with an act of kindness is something that they are all capable of.  They will learn that the  smallest gestures can make a big difference by simply putting a smile on someone's face.
